Oh how blessed thy homework be, hatred and all bundled into a great ball of energetic fustration... Oh how blessed...

Anthems:

Japanese National Anthem "Kimigayo (The Emperor's Reign)"

-May the reign of the Emperor continue for a thousand, nay, eight thousand generations and for the eternity that it takes

for small pebbles to grow into a great rock and become covered with moss.

Canadian National Anthem "O Canada"

-O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Zimbabwe National Anthem "Kalibusiswe Ilizwe leZimbabwe (Blessed be the Land of Zimbabwe)"

-Lift high the banner, the flag of Zimbabwe
The symbol of freedom proclaiming victory;
We praise our heroes' sacrifice,
And vow to keep our land from foes;
And may the Almighty protect and bless our land.

Oh lovely Zimbabwe, so wondrously adorned
With mountains, and rivers cascading, flowing free;
May rain abound, and fertile fields;
May we be fed, our labour blessed;
And may the Almighty protect and bless our land.

Oh God, we beseech Thee to bless our native land;
The land of our fathers bestowed upon us all;
From Zambezi to Limpopo
May leaders be exemplary;
And may the Almighty protect and bless our land.

Reasons for color and symbols on flag:

Japan - White with a large red disk (representing the sun without rays) in the center

Canada - The flag is red and white because red and white are Canada's offical colors of Canada. They were given to Canada by King George V, in 1921.  The maple tree is a very common tree in Canada, thus explains the representation of the maple leaf.

Zimbabwe - Yellow stands for mineral wealth. Green represents the country's vegetation and natural resources. Red recalls the blood spilt during the liberation struggle. Effective date: 18 April 1980.

Shang Dynasty

Culture - The Shang were masters in the art of bronze casting. Objects made of bronze have been found in tombs under the Shang influence. These bronze objects are among the most admired creations of Chinese art. Bronze was probably first used in making weapons and vessels for rituals. The vessels were used as a ceremonial instrument for preparing and serving food and drinks in the ancestral rites (later used for decorations).

Achievements - The Shang dynasty replaced the Xia dynasty. The Shang was mostly a farming society ruled by an aristocratic class whose major concern was war. The Shang built large, elaborate cities. Also mastered the art of bronze casting.

Decline - The Shang dynasty was overthrown by the Zhou dynasty.

Zhou Dynasty

Culture - The land ownership ways continued from the Shang, peasants worked on lands owned by their lord, but they also had land of their own that they farmed for their own use. Life for farmers was not easy with high taxes that needed to be paid. Classes of artisans and merchants lived in walled towns under the direct control or the local lord. Trade originally involved the exchange of local products that were use everyday. Eventually trade increased to include goods brought in from distant regions. This included salt, iron, cloth, and luxury items. Slaves were usually prisoners of war.

Achievements - The Zhou was responsible for large-scale water projects that were set in motion to control the flow of rivers and spread water evenly to the fields. Canals were built to make the transport of goods easier from one region to another. They had also invented iron plowshares the made it possible to plow land that had not yet been use for farming. This enlarged the amount of land that could be farmed. The late Zhou period had an increase of population to 50 million. Things made of Iron were more commonly seen. Were also responsible for developing additions to the Chinese writing language. Also developed the belief of a mandate of heaven (read clouds for description).

Decline - People began to revolt against the Zhou, because the mandate of heaven allows the people to revolt against corrupt rulers. Civil war broke out and everyone ignored the authority of the Zhou. Eventually and slowly, the Qin started to defeat the chief rivals and in 221 B.C., the Qin declared a new dynasty.

Steinbeck novels show up all over. Most already read by readers, and some never heard of. The Pearl would be the case of a Steinbeck novel not released to the public. But what makes a Steinbeck novel and how are we sure it is a Steinbeck? Was The Pearl written by Steinbeck, or Steinway? Steinbecks fascination with the working poor is the basis of a lot of his novels along with the theme of dreams. Steinbecks fascination with the working poor and peoples dreams prove that The Pearl is indeed a Steinbeck piece.

Steinbeck shows how each character of his books struggle to make ends meet and are very poor. The book Of Mice and Men shows two men traveling around during the great depression, trying to find jobs and make ends meet. The Pearl shows a small family of native culture living poor amongst the rich. Both novels go into great detail about how poor each family is and how hard it is to cooperate with society in their position. Dreams are also a very important trait included when comparing both novels. Each character has their own dream, hoping that they can get the money to make their dreams possible. Lennie’s dream of tending rabbits in Of Mice and Men. Kino’s dream of his sons education and his wife and his marriage in The Pearl. Of course, for those who have read the novels, the dreams in each of these stories are shattered. Steinbeck shows that luck isn’t always on the side of those who need it most. These dreams could have been easily achieved if the characters were not put down by society for being poor. This is an important concept of each novel. Society shuns the main characters making it very hard for them to succeed, either it be do to race or social status. If society was not so cruel in their treatment towards these people, the dreams of the novels could be succeeded. (235 Words)

Steinbeck also shows a relationship of the troubles each group of characters has to go through. Both novels are shockingly similar in the way the main characters dreams are shattered and how they get into an even bigger hole with society. Lennie accidentally breaking the neck and killing Curley’s wife in Of Mice and Men. Kino killing a man trying to steal his pearl and also killing three men hunting his family down on the run in The Pearl. Of course, murder is illegal in both novels. They have to run and hide, trying to escape the punishment they will receive if they were caught. But of course you can’t run and hide forever. The death of a main or important character is shared between the novels. Lennie’s death by the river and Coyotito, the son of Kino and Juana, being shot in the head mistakenly by one of the people tracking the family down. Death is obviously a trait of Steinbeck novels. But death and crimes aren’t always the most convincing traits. The great details of the surrounding environments of each novel are similar. Steinbeck likes to explain what type of environment the characters live in, along with what animals and what people live around them. This is an important trait of each novel. (215 Words)

Steinbeck novels share many similar traits including death, living situations, dreams and environments. But there are also many differences, but not enough to compare between Of Mice and Men and The Pearl. This information can prove that The Pearl, is in fact a Steinbeck novel.
